Ranthodon (cont.)
Nov.30-Dec.1. arriving Estancia San Ramon at 9:30 p.m., Warm,
no wind, moon came up about midnight. Heard barn
owl a several times during night, saw one at 9:49.
6 horses near our observing area. They partly hazy all night.
We had the NVGs on we spotted 4 Ranthodon during the night.
#1 We picked up at 9:53 out in the turf, which was as early
as you could get them to locate. Followed him
until 12:25 when he went down a hole. Then we
went to bed and got up at 3:45 (3/4 hour) and spotted
3 more Ranthodon (see below), the last one of which
stayed out until 5:54, which was light enough
to follow him until 11:00. Saw one
other R while following it. Hence a total of 5 sightings
in the 100 x 140 yd² area covered in our observations.
Probably 4 or 5 individuals. See map next page.
#1. Spotted soon after dark at 9:53, as early as
we could be effectively and kept him in sight until he
went down a hole in the turf at 12:25 = 2 hrs 32 min.
The hole where he disappeared was 30 yards from where
we first saw him. Another R passed within 2 m of
him at 11:04 at a place 50 yards from the hole into
which he disappeared. During the 2 1/2 hour, he spent
most of it eating or "searching", presumably for food items.
Occasionally he would settle in one spot for 5 minutes or
more, poking into the grass for food, and chewing. He
scratched his fur 3 or 4 times, worked his face 2 or 3 times,
but no grooming sessions lasting more than a few
