released line this morning, morning clear, calm,
heavy frost, left at 8:30 for Barbados.
Saw 1 hare yesterday afternoon and one wild
goose lighting 2 nights. Very few squawked on the
road. Heard barn owl at 10 pm last night, and
California Quail both mornings. Sr. Marful says the
snowy winter of 1983/84 killed almost all quail.
Ceranaco came down into his front yard during
the snows. He says the little gray fox has only just
arrived in this region and that it probably attacks
quail. No martina tianarone, he says, but
that they used to be there. There is the remains of a
brick-making operation in the woods near our
trofes. Marful says they used chacay wood for fuel and
that it used to be much more abundant. Cipre
also used to go all the way to Comallo but it
died off and into fence posts etc. Marful is 56 and
has been here something like 17 years.
