Spent several hours in town having the car greased and My route from Porterville was south along the Golden State Highway to Orosi and thence east through Fountain Springs and California Hot Springs to Pigeon Flat. From Pigeon Flat I went north along the road back to C.H.S.s for about a 1/2 mile and then eastward along the first right hand road. I continued along this road for 3 miles, to th end and made camp at what is known as the old saw mill. Soil - Coarse gritty soil from decomposed granite. On the steeper, more eroded slopes it is quite coarse while on the gentler slopes or fills it is of a finer nature. The general dry color is a light buff brown but along the streams an about bogs it is much darker often approaching black which is due probably to the water and decaying organic matter.
