Wm. B. Richardson 1935 General Account 5 On 25 4 mi S E Portwill, 550 ft. Tulare Co., Calif. Merry Christmas. On 26 I set 19 gopher traps along the Tule River for a quarter mi each side of the Bordeau Dam. (4 mi. E SE Portwill, 500 ft, Tulare Co, Calif.) All of the traps were placed within 50 yd of the river in the sandy soil. The river bottom land is vegetated with Cottonwoods, Willows, Sycamores etc. but during recent years much of the large trees have been removed to clear the land for both pasture and fire wood, thus the grassy areas or pasture lands are a prominent feature especially along that area farthest away from the river. The sandy area is about on the average of 1/2 mi wide. It varies but is still a continuous strip of sandy land from the valley extending into the foothill area. Dec. 27 "From the 19 traps last this morning I took 4 gophers. I reset each traps away from the river (away 200 yd) in a cut over pasture land.
