several pictures of them. As it ran over
small sand ridges it left drag marks
as if it had "put on the brakes" or
slid over with its hind legs dangling.
Other large Una notata were observed
but we were unable to capture any as
they ran into holes as soon as they were
disturbed. The ad of Una had bright orange
patches laterally on the ventral surface.
STR 1444 A good sized Crotalus cerastes
was found coiled in the sand in the
sun- fully exposed - approx 6' from the
base of a creosote bush. The creosote
bush was large (>7' tall or more) and
healthy (leaves green not many dead
branches). RCS got several photographs
of it and then we bagged it. Again
it was very sluggish and docil. we
prodded it and tried to get it to move
but it wouldn't budge or even rattle.
It was quite easy to pick the snake up
on the end of my noosing pole and
drop it in the sack. The snake captured
yesterday morning at Pisgah Crater
was also quiet and took several minutes
before seeming to be alert and aroused.
