Ruth, Stephen 1971 Reptile Collecting Trip 6 May 12 Pisgah Crater, San Bernardino Co., Calif. retreat beneath a small lava rock to which I had tracked it. See R.C.S. sp. acct. This day for full details. No chucks were observed. This seemed strange as it was still warm without being overly hot. Several Curmidophorus were spotted but we did not attempt to capture them. I came upon an adult of Gopherus agassizi tucked (withdrawn) into its shell at the base of a clump of Gallita grass. It made a hissing sound as I approached - probably as it pulled more tightly into its shell. The carapace and plastron were smooth as many of the growth rings had been worn away. Several other tortoise tracks were seen in the sand during the afternoon. We got back to the car at about 1830. SBR 14/10 1845 AOR Rhynosoma platyrhinos see sp. acct. 14/11 1850 " " " " u u u
