8 Feb 102 Amphibian Collecting Trip
.8 mi. off Hwy. 9 on Clear Creek Rd.
Brookdale, Santa Cruz Co., Calif.
and 4 feet away from the
stream on redwood leaf litter.
The Rana catesbeiana about
1 1/4" s.v. was on wet Oxalis
on an island where the
stream divided. It jumped
about on land and caught
my attention.
RCS found a Dicamptodon
20 yds from the stream and
about 12 feet above the
stream in an area of heavy
leaf litter under a 15' x
6" diameter redwood log. Tan
Oak, Douglas fir, and a few
redwoods right in the area.
Ensating as on a
previous visit - despite the
fact that the habitat looked
ideal - were hard to find.
Slender salamanders were
also uncommon.
The Dicamptodon was about
6" s.v and was nicely mottled.
