S.B. 1444 1978 Journal 3 7 Feb 107 Amphibian Collecting Trip Valencia Lagoon, Rio del Mar turnoff hwy 1, Santa Cruz co., Calif. Felt the spike rush was the site upon which the A.m. croceum laid its eggs. The net along the bottom of the drainage channel has about 1/2" x 3/4" mesh. Cucuya (sp? African) grass has been planted in the drain channel. It has been around and used in California for about 30 years. Tom Brown thought that native vegetation might have a hard time competing with Cucuya grass and thus seeding may be important. Blackberry and willows are other important plants in the pond area. The operating policy of the Highway Department is to construct highways anticipating future growth of California. A good deal of silting has already taken place
