Mexico trip - Brownsville area
28 April
2100hrs the landscape. No lizards or snakes were
(cont'd) seen, but three Gopherus berlandieri were
found at burrow entrances arranged on
within one small shrub-covered hillock;
other vacant burrows were seen nearby.
One shed skin of a Masticophis taeniatus
was found among some brush. Later, returning
to Brownsville we stopped at several sites
adjacent to irrigation canals with many
cover objects (logs + refuse) to look for frogs
but none were seen except for a few frogs in
a canal a few miles SE of Brownsville.
29 April
1100hrs After driving in Brownsville we drove out
to camp alongside the road ~10 miles SW of
Harlingen, Hidalgo Co., Texas. It Had a most
disastrous evening due to warm temps, high
humidity and the most mosquitoes this side of
the Canal Zone. Breaking up this
monotony was a period of ~½ hr of a
monsoon winds which threatened to send
my sleeping bag + contents north to somewhere
near Fargo, North Dakota. Add to this a prolonged
visit by a tractor-trailer truck and two
State Police capped off by two crop duster planes
after sundown.
