17 April Hastings Reservation, Carmel Valley, Monterey, Calif.
Oak woodland area bisected by a
stream. 16 Batriachrops, 6 Ensatinia eichholtzi,
and one juvenile Enneos schlorcaimus were
collected. One Gerranos multicarinatus (juv.)
and a Sceloporus occidentalis were also found.
The Batriachrops were found to be much more
common than at Hastings, I continued on to
the Los Tulares Ranch ~8 mi. NW of the
reservation to look for Ambystoma larvae in
the pond beside the corral. The pond is over
a hundred yards in diameter with little
standing vegetation at its edge (a few trees
at spots) and a few clumps of tule a few
in spots a few feet in from the edge. No larvae
were found during the several hours of
observation, including dip-netting through
the leaf litter and much at water's edge
and among the tule (a small cove provided
access to the tule). Hyla larvae were found,
as were Bufo livens eggs. A pair of mute
swans were in residence, as were several
Cereopsis Canadian geese and a green heron.
At least thirty Cynomys marmotata were
seen basking at the water's edge. This
morning I examined Friick Creek between
the junction with Big C. and Waneis ranch.
