29 March made one additional stop at the Indian
locality so Creel County Park, Mendocino Co., 0.4 mi E of
Palo, Mendocino Co. to turn and break open
logs, etc. The campground comprises typical
Redwood forest (most trees Sequoia; fern)
at the eastern fringe of the distribution of
redwood forest at that latitude. One Ensatina
eschscholtzii was found
beneath a piece of fallen bark and one
Taricha rivularis found walking across a
decayed redwood log in the shade (the latter was
not collected). No Batrachoseps were found
during the 1/2-hr. of observation (1300-1330 hrs).
From here we drove essentially straight
there to Berkeley.
Hastings Reservation, Carmel Valley, Monterey Co., Calif
15 April Arrived here yesterday at ~1500 hrs to spend a few
days looking primarily for Ambystoma tigrinum
breeding ponds. Weather has been unseasonably
cold; only one day this month has had temps above
60°F. According to Jim Griffin the weather has been mostly
cold & overcast with some rain but mostly drizzle
(for the season there has been ~25" of rain - ~5" above
normal). Last night's low temp was in the 30's.
