29 March Douglas fir, and red alder (Alnus rubra). Turning
rocks and logs and peeling away bark for ~1/2 hrs
(1530-1700 hrs) resulted in finding only three
Batrachoseps attenuatus, all inside rotting log.
Again, I was impressed with the possibility
may be that the area is drying out generally
after the recent rains, reducing salamander
activity. The surface litter layer was dry
to the touch and cracked under foot, and the
moss layer on several logs was noticeably dry.
From this site we returned to Hwy 1 S to Van
Damme State Park to camp; it was full, and
we came to Schoene's Lagoon.

29 March Returned to Berkeley at ~1500 hrs. We left
Albion this AM at ~ 1030 hrs via Hwy 1 S to
Hwy 128 SE across Mendocino Co., to Hwy 101S
at Cloverdale, and on to Berkeley. We stopped
at two talus-road cuts along Hwy 128 in
the redwood forest within 15 miles of the Coast
to look for Ensatina eschscholtzii, but none
were uncovered in over an hour of picking away
at rocks and talus. Sally Susnowitz and I
