Hanken, James 1974 Pituophis melanoleucus Hastings Natural History Reservation, Carmel Valley, Monterey Co, Calif 2 May regurgitate stomach contents were unsuccessful. I placed the snake in a can to show Mike Macoberts later, and thought that the snake might act less less aggressively later, after being kept in a cooler place (air temp at 2PM was 16.5°C). This assumption proved to be incorrect, for upon showing the snake to Mike at ~5:45 PM, with the snake much colder, it produced the same aggressive reaction. This is the first snake of this species that I have seen yet this year at Hastings. Possibly this individual had just emerged from hibernation and had not yet fed since emerging, which might explain this highly aggressive defensive reaction
