Ambystoma collecting in Mexico, Hidalgo, and
Michoacan
20-24 Dec meadow beside the highway. The Nopaltepec
growing animals were taken in the small pool that was
all that remained of the large pond of last
summer. We next worked a locality suggested by
Brad Shaffer NW of Toluca. We found small
artificial muddy cattle ponds adjacent to a
stream beside the highway and seined
14 larvae. The surrounding habitat is nearly
deroid of trees, being mostly corn fields.
The ponds would appear to be temporary; I can't
imagine where the adults would take shelter.
Yesterday we visited several permanent and
temporary ponds ~ 12 mi. W of Morelia but
found no Ambystoma, although all ponds
had R. pipiens. The permanent ponds had
small fish which might limit occupancy by
Ambystoma. Today we drive from Morelia to
Mexico City and leave tonight for the US.
