13 Dec The previous two days were spent repeating the attempt
4 made last summer to collect Thorius minutissimus at
to type locality of Santo Tomas Teipan in near
Tehuantpeque. We took the dirt road to Sta. Maria
Entepex that leaves the Pan Am Highway ~1½
km W of la Reforma at an elev. of ~700 m. We then
dropped down to ~500 m at the river crossing after ~9 km.
This time we were able to cross the river in our VW
bus. The road then steeply ascends to ~1760 m
at Sta Maria Entepex at km 30. Continuing on the
road we reached S.T. Teipan after an additional
24 km where the road ends ~1 km before the town.
The approx. elevation is 2200 m. Unfortunately, here in
this whole area, the original forest has all been cut
or burned previously, and either there is a chaparral-
scrub-like vegetation of thick dense undergrowth
with scattered oaks or remnant pine forest with
sparsely scattered pines with exposed ground in
between. Few logs exist to turn; those present are
mostly charred, the ones wet and dark were either
dry or, if not had no salamanders. We hiked
beyond the town where the forest remnant is a
bit thicker, but cover is sparse (people were
seen returning to the village with burros loaded
with firewood) or dry, despite the thick fog the
area seems very dry at this time of year. The vegetation
force, though, did seem depressed in elevation, possibly
