10 Dec Hotel Mansion Imperial, Oaxaca, Est. Oaxaca, Mexico
Yesterday Tom and I took a ½ day trip to the locality
above El Tejocote to try once again to get more
Thorius. Again we were unsuccessful. The forest was
very dry. As this area is lower in elevation than
most Thorius localities in Oaxaca, dry season
collecting is not possible: if I want to look again,
it will have to be during or soon after the wet
season. We returned to Oaxaca at mid-day
and took the rest of the day off, including a visit
to Monte Alban.
11 Dec Yesterday Tom and I visited Thorius localities
W of San Vicente Lachixio to get samples of the second
of two species for which I have only two for electrophoresis.
The first was 16.1 km W and I presume it to be the
same place as 15.5 km W three summers ago. There
is a large meadow with a small rivulet, all
surrounded by pine and pine-oak woods. Fallen logs
are abundant and we worked for a couple hours,
finding Thorius but only locally (i.e. concentrated in a
few logs). This locality is very reminiscent of the locality
W of Zaachila, Oaxaca both in the Sierra de la
Altepetlac. Three Cochranas and Centrolutes
and Scelophorus were also taken. The second locality
is a steep, shaded slope 13.6 km W (presumably
equivalent to the previous locality 13.2 km W).
Again, rotten logs were abundant and we collected
