9 Dec
the previous two days were spent in the Totontepec
area trying to get a decent Thorius sample and
look for the elusive aquatic Pseudoeurycea. In
contrast to the summer, the skies were almost
clearless and the area very pleasant for working.
For Thorius we worked primarily the two salaradas
localities of last summer. Over the two days 19
Thorius were found, most from the lower site. Here,
again, P. gracilis was more abundant, found both
under bark and on the ground. Thorius was found
exclusively on the ground under logs or in piles
of wood chips (and one or two under rocks). Wildflowers
were abundant and we photographed many.
During the night of 7 Dec we checked several streams
for the aquatic Pseud but found none. The water,
though less than the summer, was still flowing
abundantly, and it was difficult to see clearly
