7 Dec Yesterday Tom and I drove to the locality ~25
km W of Zaachila from which has proven difficult
to obtain adequate Thoreus samples despite the
presence of two species. After working the forest
adjacent to the meadow, both next to the meadow
and higher up, we returned to the fork in the road
and took the right turn. The road continues along
the high llanos, never getting much higher than
the first locality. We checked one or two forested
areas (thick pine-oak and just pine) but found
only one pseudoeurycea. We then returned to
the first llano, but checked the forest along
the right fork. This was the same dense pine-oak
mixed forest with abundant soils, but
the forest was much drier than the first locality.
We managed to find 4 Thoreus on one slope
in this spot, 3 in wood chips, the rest under
bark or fallen logs; a very localized
abundance considering how many other areas
we worked nearby. Only one animal
conspicuously appeared different from the rest (see
op. acc't). Is this the second species?
