5 July Vicinity of Tlacolula, Est. Oaxaca, Mexico
Putla :) But I completely forgot to check the
map after our initial failure and only thought
of the idea of heading S only after we were
close to Oaxaca. That would be a good
locality to hit in the fall.
11.1 mi NE of San Juan del Estado, Est. Oaxaca,
Mexico
7 July Brad and I ventured today to a locality
visited by Wake, Lynch, et al 2 years ago, from
which they obtained 1 Thorius. The locality is
near Oaxaca City, easily reached by road,
although beyond San Juan del Estado the road
is dirt and often steep, and often bumpy
making travel slow. At ~9 mi past
SIDE a fork in the road appears. We first
took the right fork continued on ~1 mile, and
worked a forest at 2680m unsuccessfully. Returning
to the fork we took the other road for 2.6 miles
and worked a very good looking habitat at 2685m.
The forest is tall with abundant logs and festoons.
A few Thorius were found in these microhabitats,
but by far most (>50 were found by us in less
than 2 hours by working by hand through the
extensive piles of wood chips in the leaf litter.
Presumably when the forest is wet enough, Thorius can
leave those logs, etc. for here. We returned to Oaxaca until that
