vicinity of Totontepec (out of Milla) Oaxaca, Mexico
3.4 July ~ 30 miles to Milla . Heading through Milla ,
one then continues on a dirt road towards
Zicatapa Mixes (or referred to as Mex Hwy 190).
The road is graded dirt , and one stays on it
for ~ 54 miles through several towns a sign
indicating a left turn towards Totontepec .
From here another dirt road climbs a bit , and
then begins its descent to the Caribbean lowlands .
Totontepec lies ~ 15 mi NE of the turnoff , at 1955 m.
Ascending to the turnoff (2570 m) one passes from
the arid Oaxaca Valley through pine - tan oak
forest (reminiscent of that on C. San Felipe ),
especially around the town of Tamazulapan
(2130 m el ) and finally to increasingly wetter ,
more dense, taller cloud forest, very
similar to C. Pelon . Dropping down to Totontepec
one passes through the wet cloud forest and
passes several waterfalls and creeks draining the
mountain . Here and there the road gets very
muddy . On the afternoon Yesterday afternoon we
worked at a slope in the rain at 13.6 mi NE
Tamazulapan (2570 m.) and found nothing . This is
also the site of a stream crossing the road
and a clear pool 10-20' across. This might be
one of Campbell's aquatic species localities but
we never had a chance to return here last
night, although we searched it in vain today .
