Hotel Tala Inn, San José, Prov. de Cartago, Costa Rica
16 Sept I left Turrialba on the morning of 14 Sept
for Cerro la Muerte. Working there is a patch
of forest immediately NW of the junction of
Horry's 2+12 in El Empalme which, while not
undisturbed, has a good canopy over with
abundant fallen logs + bromeliads on
an E-facing slope facing a small stream.
I looked in the usual spots and found 4
Bolitoglossa under small pieces of cover
or near the surface of rotting logs. Nothing
was found in bromeliads, or nor in cover
defects in the more open areas. I continued on
to Dave Wake's locality 22 km S of El Empalme
where the highway crosses a river (Rio
Humo?) and, on his advice walked road
cuts talus. The ravine is well-forested,
but steep and difficult to move in, and
so I was limited to working a talus
hillside covered with small undergrowth
on the N of the creek and W of the road.
However, by raking in the talus I found
15 Bolitoglossa in ~1 hour. They are quite
variable in coloration but most have variable
amounts of red coloration on the limb
bases and I assume they are all
B. subpalmata. I continued on to
Villa Mills for lunch and then checked
