Harris Beach State Park, Curry Co, Oregon
27 March 3.3 miles W of the junction of Hwy's 42 x 42 S
Locality 9 in Coquille, Coos County, we stopped at a seep
along the road by a seep at the base of a
road cut (~100' high) facing the Coquille R.
Pseudotsuga douglasii was dormant above
the cut which was itself overgrown with low
shrubs and ferns. Six Plethodon (presumably
durri because of dorsal stripe extending before
tail tip and locality) were readily found
within 1/2 hour by peeling away rocks in the
splash zone or at the base of the seep.
Time of observation 1430-1500 hrs. Continuing S
on Hwy 42 we passed thru Myrtle Point, then
took the road off of Hwy 42 towards Agness. We
were told by a local resident that the road from
Agness S to Gold Beach was closed, so decided
not to continue on towards Agness. We did stop
Locality 10 at another seep ~1 mi. N of the town of Dayland
similar to locality 9. Working the seep for ~15 minutes
produced one Ensatina escholtzii in the rock
rubble at the base of the seep. From here we
then headed back to Hwy 101 S to Port Oxford to
spend the night. We had difficulty finding a
place to camp (Humbug Mtn. State Park was closed)
and finally found a small clearing partly
cleared area among so within a black pine
