20 Sept Tom Hethington and I returned from the
White Mtns last night, having left in the
AM but making several stops en route.
We first checked Silver Canyon NE of Bishop
for salamanders. We followed the road of
E of laws until the creek disappeared below
ground and then worked our way down to
canyon. A good amount of water was flowing
but access to moist areas was difficult because
of dense willow thickets. Even when one could
reach likely microhabitats no salamanders
were found. I found a kingsnake sunning
itself on the creek bank and Tom found
a dead shrew beside the stream. We
stopped just W of the Yosemite Park boundary
after crossing Tioga Pass to look for termite
diags. No termites were found, but Tom
collected one juvenile Ensatina under a
rather dry log. Also, we collected a DOR
Masticophis taeniatus on the road out of
the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest NW of Westgard
Pass. A Sceloporus had been squeezed out of
its stomach when it was killed. We
arrived in Berkeley at ~9:30 PM
