White Mtn Research Sta - Crooked Creek Lab,
White Mtns, Mono Co Ca, Calif
19 Sept Creek which runs past the Crooked Creek lab
and left the car at the entrance to the
4-wheel drive vehicle road at the edge
of the cany Cottonwood Creek Canyon. On
17 Sept we hiked down the canyon to the NE
of the dirt road which goes intersects
Cottonwood Creek E of the junction w/ Tres
Plumas Cr.. We then proceeded W along
Cottonwood Cr. to the point where the 4-wheel
drive vehicle reaches the creek, and then
returned to our car. Yesterday we descended
via the jeep road and worked the canyons
as far as Granite Meadow to the NW, and also Poison Cr. before returning to the Lab.
The most promising localities were clumps
of aspens on N-facing slopes, in some cases
associated with seeps, which appeared
moist enough for salamanders. Unfortunately,
there were few of these areas, in particular
the first canyon by which we descended
17 Sept, a cluster at the NE end of Granite
Meadow, and a relatively extensive
forested area along the S bank of Cottonwood
Cr E of Poison Cr. Other patches of aspen
were present, i.e. Poison Cr., but these were
not moist at all.
