White Mtn. Research Sta - Crooked Creek Lab,
White Mtns, Mono Co, Calif 12,160 ft.
# 17 Sept Tom Hellenington and I arrived here at
around noon after today. We left Berkeley yesterday
at ~4 PM and drove E, crossing the Sierra
at Tioga Pass, and camping overnight at the
Hardley's Spring Campground a few miles
S of Lee Vining. This morning we drove to
the White Mtn. Res. Sta @ Hdtgs outside
Bishop (~3 1/2 mi W on E Line St) to check in
with Don Buser and get directions to the
Crooked Creek lab. It's necessary to drive S
from Bishop to just above Lone Pine, head E
over Westgard Pass, and then N into the
Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest. The
weather was clear and crisp with temps in
the 60's. There was little evidence of any
recent rain except for a few drying
pools in the dirt road towards the lab.
Snow was visible at the highest elevation
in the Sierra to the West.
19 Sept Tom and I are will leave White Mt. this morning
after 1 1/2 days of looking for the ephemeral
Ensatinia, unsuccessfully. We spent the
afternoon of 17 Sept and all of yesterday
collecting the Cottonwood Creek drainage,
On both days we took the road to Cottonwood
