31 July
(6 August cont'd) in winter months. #Ours were found in local
abundance, almost all being taken in the
few good salamander logs (i.e. interior
breaking up into crumbs, good exfoliating bark).
Doug and Bob found the only friend of the day
under a piece of bark on the ground at the
edge of a clearing while several treefrogs (Hyla)
were found under bark or logs. We also
collected several Bursia roaming about,
and Sceloporus of two species under the
bark on stumps. Returning through Carrizal del
Bravos where Ted had asked the locals to
collect lizards, & we purchased several more
Bursia and a small dwarf viper, Bothrops sp. The Bravos locality was at ~8300' elevation.
Ted has collected a few just SW of Carrizal
del Bravos at 7500' and they probably don't
occur much lower down than that. Several
snakes were found on the road during our visit
between going out to and beyond Carrizal
including Lioiophanes, Ozone Micrus and
one Rhadinaea; all but the latter one were dead.
1 August: The road from between Asoladero
and Puerto del Gallo to the SW involves ~20 mi.
of dirt rough dirt road (we were told by locals)
and Puerto del Gallo is best reached by going
