Journal
Hotel Mayorga, Fortin de las Flores, Est., Veracruz,
Mexico
25 July There have been no journal entries since I
literally stopped in mid-sentence on 20 July.
We have been on the go continuously, or using
evening hours to preserve and freeze specimens
leaving no time for Doug nor I to write notes.
I'll try to summarize the last few days below:
20 July - Continued working the area between
Llano de las Flores and the top of Cerro Pelon,
stopping every few miles to try to get a Thorius
sample. In an effort attempt to pinpoint
the type locality for T. macdougalli we drove
to the town of Maquiltlianguis, SW of Cerro Pelon.
I inquired at the restaurant at Machin as to
the whereabouts of the road to the town, and
was directed to a turnoff from Mex. Hwy 175
1.2 mi. (by road) S of Machin, contrary to the
Oaxaca State map which has this road leaving
from Machin (although this road will also get
you to Maquiltlianguis via Comaltepec). The
road quickly drops in elevation from the
main Hwy to the town of Maquiltlianguis at
6750 ft. Once in the town I asked where Cerro
Thor Humo was, and everyone pointed back to
Cerro Pelon and said it was right next to
Cerro Pelon. Apparently, Macdougall got the Thorius
on or adjacent to Cerro Pelon at a high elevation
