Here we took Locality ? County Rd. 48 E along the Smith R. Approx 6.9 mi; E of Gardiner the road runs along the edge of steep wooded slopes leading to the river valley. Several steep, studdy canyons extend uphill N of the road: we examined two. The vegetation was mostly red alder (Alnus rubra) Pseudotsuga menziesi and locally (Tsuga sp) with abundant ferns. Four adults were found either under or inside rocks and logs or under moss on logs. The two remaining adults and juvenile were found under 4" thick logs within an inch of a small rivulet no more than 1½' - wide carrying the runoff from the canyon. These latter three were found within 3' of each other. Hyla regilla were heard calling from the flooded fields beside the river. Time 4 hrs. 1630-1800 hrs. A heavy rain fell throughout. Returning to Hwy 101 we continued S to Coos Bay and the Bayshore Motel.
