Restament at El Machin, Oaxaca, Mexico
19 July N of the junction of Mex Hwy 190+175 at an elev.
N of 7450 ft. Despite the presence of mature oak+
pine forest with abundant fallen logs with
good bark no salamanders were found. The
surface litter was dry but the logs and deeper
litter was moist. We collected two Euneos
and two Sceloporus, I myself saw at least
ten tarantulas. N of this locality the road
begins to drop in elevation and then the
habitat vegetation quickly becomes more
xeric (scrubby, almost chaparral-like). I
much doubt if there are any salamanders N of La
Grande. Continuing N we stopped again 7.1 mi
N of Guelatao at 7320' when the pine-oak
forest has begun to reappear, although it is
obviously drier than at higher elevations.
Working for ~1 1/2 hrs we collected only one
Thorius despite the abundance of good cover
(rocks+logs). The lone Thorius was found under
a fallen limb only ~3" in diameter. It is
of a different species than those to the S being
generally smaller (even for a Thorius) with a small
oval nostril. This individ. is apparently diseased
as it had a tumor-like growth on the left side
of its head and behind the right hind limb.
Two more Euneos were also found, and an
Eleutherodactylus hopping around in the
