17 July Hotel Primavera, Oaxaca, Est. Oaxaca, Mexico
spent the morning walking part way up
Cerro San Felipe along the trail supposedly
used by E. H. Taylor when he collected the
type specimens of T.pulmonaris and T.narisswalis
The trail begins at ~5700ft. and we
continued to just above 6300 ft which was
in about 3 miles. The trail passes through
chaparral-like vegetation of mostly scrub
oak, running across several small ridges
between which run small rivulets lined
with more mesic vegetation of broad-leaved
trees, understory, and litter. We raked
through this litter several times along
the path but found no Thorius. When
we decided to turn around the vegetation
was getting less scrubby and bit taller,
but from what we could see the pine forest
(where all of my Thorius in this region have
so far found) did not begin until several
hundred feet higher. Dave Wake and
Jim Lynch journeyed to the town of Etla on
the N side of Cerro San Felipe and collected
only one Thorius, apparently pulmonaris, and
some reptiles.
