Hotel Quinta Chilla, Tamayuncate, San Luis
Potosi, Mexico
11 July millipedes. He tells me that the cave protruded
horizontally into the hillside ~20 yards
and was equally broad once inside the cave
mouth which was ~30' wide and 10' high.
There were a couple small pools of water in
addition to ~⅓-½ of the walls dripping
with water. Stalagmites were abundant. From
Durango we continued W to Tamayuncate
stopping at a few localities to look for
terrestrial salamanders. Limestone areas seem
generally difficult to work as most of the potential
rocks can't be turned. Also, most of the trees
are stunted (presumably due to shallow soils)
and there are few, if any, logs to turn.
Continuing on to Tamayuncate along winding
Hwy 85 through dense fog we passed
the town of Teato Grande where a breeding
chorus of frogs was heard as we drove by.
The frogs were calling from a shallow (<6" deep)
pool alongside the road and in front of some
homes. We stopped to collect and were
helped by some local cuckins. In a matter
of minutes we had collected three Bufo, one
small Hylid, and five large hylids possibly
Smilisca or Phrynosus.
