Morelos, Est. Coolimila, Mexico, elev. 1900 ft.
July trip to one of the guards. After crossing we drove
S on Mex Hwy 57 to just S of Salina where
we drove W on the road to Barrotecan and
camped. For most of the afternoon we had been
trailing a large storm which had evidently
dropped much rain in its path. The road
was often wet and large shallow pools
were common on the desert adjacent to the road.
While this made it inconvenient
to camp (we slept in the car) it did bring
out anurans, and I caught three small
frogs calling in a pool beside the road by
our camp. They appear to be
Gastrophryne by their small size and general
shape. Their call was a moderately pitched
troll lasting 2-3 seconds and given every
15-30 seconds. All calling was done from the
middle of small clumps of grass in water,
and it was necessary to wade into water
to capture them. We arose this AM at sunrise
under overcast skies and drove straight to
Morelos. Hopefully we will reach Cerro
Potosi this afternoon
