Hotel Betthangel, Catemaco, Est. Veracruz, Mexico
4 February 7:30 PM & Brad Shaffer and I arrived in Catemoco
last night at ~6 PM after a long day's drive
from Fortin. In the morning we had returned
to the locality in Fortin where we had a few days
earlier found a B. platydactyla under a
rock slab. We worked the adjacent cafetal, a
very pleasant area of coffee trees and banana
plants often shaded by tall, broad, vine-covered
trees on a slope which faces SW towards
Cerro Chicalmacle. The ground under shaded
rocks and logs was damp. Three lineatriton
lineola were found under rocks and 2 B. reflexus
in banana leaf axils. Brad also found one Bufo,
one additional frog, and three more snakes with
a yellow neck ring under small exposed rocks.
During the main walk through the cafetal. We
left Fortin E on the non-toll road towards
Cordoba looking for other likely spots to find
B. platydactyla. We stopped 4.1 km E of Fortin
to visit a small cluster of trees adjacent to the
Las Palmas Hotel. None were found here, nor in
the yards of people living across the highway,
although they assured us that there were many
"caconetes" to be had in moist times.
As we were leaving & flipped small rocks in
an unshaded grassy field next to the road
