Hawken, James 1975 Journal Home of Margie Deaka, Corvallis, Benton County Oregon 23 March and then on Rt (Rte) 99 (W) north to Corvallis. The rear muffler broke off from the exhaust gipe on my car while still in bedding and I have driven with the car that way until now. Today we wanted to stay relatively close to Corvallis because of the car, so investigated several localities in the vicinity for salamanders. Corvallis lies along the E edge of the Coast Range; and a flat, broad valley then extends lies E between it and the Cascade Range. Taking rte 99 (W) north out of Corvallis we first stopped at the Locality 4 McDonald State Forest + Game Refuge headed (W) on Tampico Rd (County Rte .65 ~ 3.7 mi N of Lewisburg) then for ~1.3 mi, then S on County Rte. Locality 1 45 for 5.6 mi to the entrance of McDonald State Forest + Game Refuge. Here a stream is bordered on both sides by steep forested slopes of 1° Pseudotsuga menziesi forest interspersed with shorter secondary growth, primarily Arbutus menziesi and small Douglas firs. We walked in along the fire trail W of the stream for ~ 1/4 mi. stopping at several spots to turn logs, bark, rocks and rubble through rock rubble and talus along the road. Three Ensatina eschscholtzii picta were found
