2 February from the xeric-adapted vegetation (yucca +
desert-like shrubs) and today ground that this
area receives little vegetation. From San Felipe
the road climbs to the E-sloping hills covered with
a pine-shrub forest, although still quite dry.
Continuing E the forest becomes denser with
mixed pinot oak and moss on fallen trunks.
Our first locality was at a clearing ~12 km along
the road from San Felipe with fields cleared and
planted to potatoes and others used for cattle
grazing. The steep slopes formed a canyon
and were covered with mixed pine and chaparral.
A heavy fog made the exposed surfaces wet
but most logs and rocks were dry underneath.
However, a few logs and rocks, and wood chips were
moist underneath and here salamanders were
found. In total 38 Thorius and 11 Pseudoeurycea
were found, often together under the same log. Some
were also found under logs in the canyon bottom
under pine trees which contributed much fog drip.
Four Bologonus were also found under bark on
stumps. Returning towards San Felipe we stopped
at a more mesic area in pine-oak forest to
work the forest and road bank. 836 Thorius
were taken in ~45 min, all from under bark or
