Hanken, James 1975 Journal Home of Margie Real, Corvallis, Benton County, Oregon 23 March Arrived here yesterday evening with Sally Susnowitz after leaving from Berkeley approx 10 AM 20 March. We had intended on driving up quickly as far north as Corvallis (via Interstate 5 at least as far as Wood, Calif) and then heading W to the coast before descending turning S to return to Berkeley to the Coast Range. Our plans were altered somewhat, however, by the appearance of a severe storm beginning in the early AM of 21 March which left heavy rain in northern California and Oregon and snow to the extent of blizzard conditions out at high elevations (e.g. Sierra-Nevadas, Cascade Range, Trinity Mtns, Siskiyou Mtns). We camped at the Hair Bay campground of the Shasta Lake Recreation Area, Shasta Co. (approx 25 mi. N of Redding) on the eve of 20 March. Heavy rain fell during the night, turning to snow by 8:00 AM (elev. 1065'). Interstate 5 North of Redding through the Siskiyou + Trinity Mtns soon closed, as were roads E & W of Redding. We spent two nights of 21 March in Redding. By yesterday (22 March) morning the roads were passable, and we continued along Int 5 to Eugene, Oregon.
