Haukey James 1975 Journal Hydromantes trip to Smith Lake & Sonora Pass Sonora Pass, Stanislaus National Forest, Tuolumne Co, Calif, 9600' elev. 5 October the slopes and the only visible water is a small stream flowing down to Deadman Creek beside the road. I turned rocks into splash gone of this stream but found no Hydromantes. There were a few, small isolated patches of melting snow still around high-up on nearly slopes and then turned my attention to the most easily accessible one on as slope S of Highway 10 of Blue Canyon. I hiked up the talus slope several hundred feet to the area of melting snow, which was more a dome of ice which had been hollowed out from by melting ice from below. I turned rock rocks just above the ice and flaked away granite slabs along the small stream but here too, found no Hydromantes. Andy and I left to return to Berkeley at around 2PM, returning at ~5PM.
