Hydromantes trip to Smith Lake + Sonora Pass
Grouse Lake, Desolation Wilderness Area, Eldorado
National Forest, Eldorado Co, Calif, 8120' elev
only at the E end where there was a slight trickle
of water emerging from a crack in a high cliff. At
the base of this vertical outcrop two adult
Hydromantes platycephalus were found, both
in association with the water from the seep. One sal
was found by peeling away moss growing along the
base, the other by lifting away a small thin rock
flake. The granite outcrops took two forms:
the first in the form of large, smooth expansive,
granite "shelves"; the other slopes slopes of granite
talus either shallow with green ground visible
beneath or thick with no ground visible. The
adult Hydromantes were found in the first
situation, while two juvenile were found in
a shallow talus area below a small stone ~
8"x4"x2". The stone was resting on earth
which was relatively dry, although the relative
great abundance of plants, ferns and moss
in the area indicated that this is a relatively
wet area compared to other banks. Both
sites for all four salamanders were 100-150'
above the level of the lake. The other banks
bordering the lake was worked for Hydromantes,
but there were no other seeps found, nor active Hydromantes.
The stream draining Smith Lake ran over
