Hawken, James 1975 Journal Pension Chimenea, El Valle de Anton, Cocle Province, Panama 27 August too rocky and would not allow a profitable venture. The conditions are evidently appropriate for raising chickens though for there is at least one large commercial chicken business with several large coops along the road. There appears to be good large expanses of original forest away from the road but the problem is the inaccess- ibility, as the more accessible areas are under cultivation. I traveled 2-3km along the road from El Valle but was able to get into some good forest owned by the chicken companies which seem interested in cutting enough to house their coops. I have no detailed map of the area, and good landmarks for mileage records are lacking, and so have estimated this locality as ~2km N(NbyN) El Valle de Anton being by road ~3-4km from La Chimuela in El Valle. The understory was quite dense with abundant ferns, palms, vines, + low shrubs while there were some taller, mature trees they were scattered offering only incomplete cover, suggesting that this may be old second-growth forest or at least partly thinned. A few bromeliads were present growing on logs on the ground. Potting
