Hanken, James 1975 Journal 1 March Hastings Reservation, Carmel Valley, Monterey Co., Calif. Worked P.D. Forion Oak Hill E of the upper peak this AM. The E+S slopes were dry exposed areas, mostly oak woodland and chaparral, with some Aesculus californica in the ravine bottoms. The N-facing slope is dry oak woodland at high elevations, becoming Q. aegifolia and oak-madron forest lower down. Sceloporus occidentalis was very common in exposed, sunny areas. Even the shaded, lower areas were mostly dry, and only three salamanders were found. Ensatina is probably present throughout these areas, with Aneides present in more open situations and the oak woodland. Two mountain quail were seen in the ravine at the SE corner of the P.O. Hill property, and a small snake was found a few in a ravine a few feet from the E boundary fence at the E of the upper peak. Sunny skies this AM are clouding up at present (~3PM).
