Pension Volcan, El Hato del Volcan, Chiriqui
Province, Panama
23 August found sofar. The lone individual (PSI) is a
mature ♂ (well-developed cirri, mental gland)
of ~3cm SVL. ~~Ground coloration is black~~
with fine light speckling dorsally. The ventr is
dark. Feet have a high degree of webbing.
(1x1x6) Under a log along the road near the log
the first log we found a frog (PS2) in a small
depression in the ground ~3"x3" x 1" deep. There
were several eggs in the depression which the frog
was "brooding." Upon being uncovered the adult
frog didn't move from the depression nor did it
move when nudged by the observer. Even after
I picked it up and placed it back in the
depression it remained stationary. Both the
adult + eggs were collected. The eggs were
of many different sizes, apparently representing
different stages of development at which they stopped
growth. The largest eggs had "tadpoles" with
gold-eyes attached and could be seen
swimming about within the egg. I returned
to Volcan at ~4:30 PM and spent ~1/2 hr
looking for Las Lagunas, two lakes SW of Volcano.
They are located within a a broad flat
area ~~mostly~~ cleared for cattle grazing and
have a woodland of ~~almost~~ lowland rainforest
surrounding them
