Hanken, James 1975 Journal Penion Volcan, El Hato del Volcan, Chiriqui Province, Panama 23 August the ground is extremely muddy and steep from the combination of roots and rain. This area resembles the area near the peak of Cerro Berginpo. I reached a maximum elevation of little over 2200 m at the upper edge of the cleared area. A little below here the road had failed, with the road not taken leading off to the NW. The fog which I took ended in the cloud area. At least two hours was spent working the cleared area with no mammals were found. This included an area cleared long ago which has an abundance of fallen, rotting, moss covered logs below a canopy of tall trees adjacent to the virgin forest, differing only in a thinner understory. The only frogs found were along the road at an elevation of 2140 m above the cloud lower slopes and adjacent to a forest partially cleared. One salamander was found lying on an enormous rotting log, after raking through the surface layers of leaf litter, rotten wood and earth. The rest of the log was searched in similar fashion but no other sale found. This is a different species than others
