Pension Volcan, El Ható del Volcan, Chiriqui Province,
Panama
22 August Jim Lynch and I had thought this to be a good
place to find centrolenid frogs, but no frogs
were even heard calling. I did find one snake,
<12" total length 4' [illegible] above the ground on a
large leaf (~1/2' across) next to the road 10' from
the stream. The snake was actively moving along
the leaf despite an air temp. of 83-8°. The
snake was beautifully colored with a yellow
ground color dorsally and ventrally, alternating
incomplete dorsal + lateral transverse
bands, and a thin median ventral dark stripe
with a longitudinal row of dark dots
on either side of this vertical stripe (no dot)
caudal scale/ido). Returning to Volcan I
stopped along two tall roadcuts well
overgrown with moss + other vegetation to look
for salamanders, one 18 km and the other 12 km
from Volcan. No sals were found, but at
the latter locality two hybrid frogs were found
in the slowly running water in a drainage
gully at the base of the road cut. I returned
to Volcan shortly after 11 PM.
