Penion Volcan El Hato del Volcan, Veraguas
Province Panama
22 August 6 PM last night I left at ~8PM heading NW
on Hwy 11 intending to walk along a small stream
located 20km from Volcan which Jinkuck
and I had found last week. There had been
rain in Volcan all day until late afternoon
when heavy showers fell for over an hour.
This proved to be favorable for night driving, as
several amphibians were found on the road
One caecilian was found NOR 10 km
(by road) NW of the junction of Hwy's 11 & 13 in Volcan.
There was vricula protruding from the body at a
point ~1/3 body length from the head
and the lower jaw appeared broken. Approx.
1km further along the road a frog was
taken (P80), probably an Eleutherodactylus.
A Rana (maculosa) was found on the road 4 km
further on. Reaching the intended stream I parked
the car and then proceeded along a road which
runs along the stream for ~50 yds, then crosses
it and leads up gradually up the canyon
wall. I proceeded slowly with a headlamp
scanning the high road banks overgrown with
vegetation for salamanders, but none were
found. Neither were any found on any of the broad
(up to 2' across) leaves overhanging the stream
