Panama: Cerro Punta area
Volcan el Chato del Volcan, Chiriqui Province, Panama
21 August particularly frustrating, with much work being
put in for often no reward. Despite the fact
that the rain and often poorly accessible
localities; even when these and more easily-reached
localities are visited, no salamanders are found.
I am about ready to give-up working this area,
not having any ideas as to more likely places
to visit or better methods to use.
Color notes: Today's small (~1/2 cm SVL) Eleuther-
dactylus resembles the other tiny frogs which have
been the most common species in this area. In
addition to the generally brownish dorsal
coloration are several alternating dark-light
stripes which radiate from the eyes out to the
upper + lower eyes and just below the lower jaw.
The second frog I am unable even to place to
family. SVL ~ 3 cm. Toes tips not expanded. Ground
color is pale lime-green, paler ventrally,
with some indistinct patches of olive-green
on the trunk (dorsum). Head is arrow-shaped
from above; snout pointed. Eyes dark except
for thin light cornea.
