Hankar, James 1975 Journal Panama: Cerro Punta area Volcan Volcan Pension Volcan, El Volcan Del Hato, Chiriqui Province, Panama 21 August parked less than a km. from my car, I attempted to ascend the road S of this road (due W of Cerro Punta) which reaches an elevation of 2410 m. The lower N-facing slopes are cleared for agriculture or cross grazing and above that is steep, dense forest. I inquired with numerous people who lived along the road and none knew of a trail to the peak or thereabouts (they also did not have a specific name for this mountain). I climbed up a hillside which had been cleared and burned for future agricultural use, but was not able to penetrate the forest above the cleared area, reaching a maximum elevation of slightly above 2200 m. I returned down the hillside through mature, virgin forest adjoining the cleared area. All during my climb (w/hus) I turned logs + rocks both in forest + cleared areas, but found two salamanders. The only frogs collected were at 2160 m, where an Eleutherodactylus was found on the ground on the cleared hillside, and another frog (see color notes below) was found on the forest floor beneath the dense understory of bamboo + palm. Returning to Cerro Punta I walked the forest visited last night in Nueva Siria, this time turning logs, etc; no salamanders were found. Looking for salamanders is now getting
