Panama: Volcan Chiriqui
Hotel Panamonte, Boquete, Chiriqui Province, Panama
20 August agreed to drive me on to the peak. We proceeded
to just above 3000m where there is a work camp
for road-workers during the dry season at which
point his fuel cell broke and he had to return
to his finca. Continuing along the road by foot
This turned out to be just as well for me, because
continuing along the road by foot within a few
hundred meters (by road) there were several
mud + rock slides which prevented passage
by car any further along. I continued along
the road to the peak just below the peak where
the road ends (~ 3350m); from here there is
a foot path along the narrow ridge to the peak.
Well-developed, tall forest drops out at ~ 3200
m, at which point the trees get progressively
smaller until near the peak the vegetation
is of low (<8-10') scattered tree and with the
ground covered with low shrubs, ferns, and
mosses. As the rain had started by 11AM before
had reached the peak, the ground and plants
were saturated with moisture, but from the
degree to which every limb and branch was
covered with moss this seems to be the general
usual situation. The ground was literally
covered with small (<1x1') rocks at this
elevation, and there was a definite lack
