Hauken, James 1975 Journal Panama : Volcan Chiriqui Hotel Panamonte, Boquete, Chiriqui Province, Panama the rim road, and under the first one which I turned 20 August I found 5 salamanders, all apparently Bolitoglossa macroura, with an additional salamander found inside the charred log. Turning similar logs and rocks along the rim road for the next hour, though, only produced three more animals under logs of sizes 4"x4"x5', 5"x5"x6', and 5"x5"x3'. Returning to the main road, I continued upwards turning logs at the roadsides and found one more salamander under a log in the road bank 6"x6"x6'. As was the case at lower elevations, the slopes of the volcano are very steep and densely wooded, making it difficult (if not dangerous) to work for salamanders. The few relatively level localities encountered were worked, but no salamanders found. Reaching an elevation of ~3000 m, I began heading back down the mountain. Additional salamanders were uncovered between the elevation of 2780-2860 m. At this elevation the road passes through a second-growth forest (original forest was burned out) grown mostly to oaks, with a few tall, original oaks remaining. All salamanders were found under logs along or just above the road bank, including five found associated with a cluster of
