Panama : Volcan Chiriqui:
Hotel Panamonte, Boquete, Chiriqui Province, Panama
20 August 10 AM Have spent the previous two days working
the upper elevations of Volcan de Chirigu. On
18 August Sr. Moreno reneged on our agreement
agreement for him to drive me to the peak, so
at ~8AM I drove my VW past El Salto to an
elevation of about 1630m, and walked from
here to just beyond the crater SE of the peak
to an elevation of ~3000 m. The weather was
sunny and warm in the AM, but soon after
arriving at the crater heavy rains began
which continued from that time (~1PM) on into
evening. A jeep road runs part-way along
the E rim of the crater, above the main road
which continues northward E of the crater
to the peak. Vegetation along the crater rim
and on the walls of the crater is of low (<8-10'),
stunted, dense brush and trees, much like
chaparral. Several charred logs along the rim
road indicate burning in the not-too-distant
past. To the E and just below the rim the mature,
tall, virgin forest reaches its upper limit.
The walls of the crater were very steep and I was
unable to climb down to the crater bottom. I made
one attempt but had to turn back because of
steep, loose mud and stones forming the walls.
There were several logs imbedded in the bank along
