Panama: Boquete area
Hotel Panamonte, Boquete, Chiriqui Province,
Panama
16 August through the former forested areas cleared for cattle
grazing. Dale drove the road and also second-
growth stands in other areas; Acorn woodpeckers
were abundant. U.S. Army Topo Sheet 3442 III - Boquete
indicate the road ending <1km SE of the peak of
Cerro Palo Alto at an elevation of ~1700 m,
but the road does present continues ascending
W to a height of almost 1900 m less than a km
SW of what appeared to be the peak of Cerro Azul.
At this point a jeep service has recently been
cleared (by slash+burn) of forest. I climbed
E to the ridge below the really peak (Cerro Azul)
to a height of 1900 m (I'm not positive of the peak
because the topography and potential landmarks
didn't easily fit the topo sheet. The upper parts
of the SE side of the ridge has long been cleared
of forest and is presently used for cattle grazing.
From the ridge at this point there is a path leading
leading W thus joining the jeep road at ~1800 m.
This path passes through virgin forest with
abundant fallen moss-covered logs along
the path and deeper in the woods. No salamanders
were found inside or under logs, under bark,
or in the few bromeliads seen which were [illegible]
At points the forest resembled that on Cerro Pesquing
